AUTO TO STICK
« on: January 15, 2007, 12:00:44 PM »
hey guys, im in the middle of putting a 1uz motor into my 1998 tacoma.  i wanted to put a 5 speed tranny onto it but dont exactly know what i need to do so.  i was just wondering if you guys could help me out on a bellhousing to use, and which stock toyota parts will work with this engine, such as a toyota clutch and flywheel.  any input would be awesome

thanks alot

First, you need a transmission itself. The best transmission to use would be the R154 from the supra, which is supposedly bulletproof, but pretty much any R series transmission would work. Is the vehicle 2WD or 4WD, because that will affect which trans. you get. A custom bellhousing would also be needed, and there is a guy here in the US making a transmission swap kit (bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, fork, throwout bearing etc) and he's aiming for a 750 dollar price tag. He just got his first cast made late last week and is going to start producing them pretty soon.  Here is the link:

Do you plan on keeping 2WD, or switching to 4WD? If you're keeping it a street rig and are going for lots of power, you ought to source an R154.

keeping it a 2wd and not really going for a ton of power like nothing insane.
