Which Tranny?
« on: November 15, 2006, 05:56:32 PM »
Which is the best transmission (5speed or 6speed) to mount to the 1UZ? I will be buying it used and I won't be able to afford a ton on this part (though I hate to go cheap on a vital component). I want something that'll hold up to 300hp/300ft lbs. torque. Not something that will just grenade when I'm in the middle of nowhere having fun.

Also, is there a specific transfer case that I should get? Gear driven or chain-driven, which is better? I'm pretty new to all this stuff and just looking for some guidance as I venture into the unknown.

Lastly, what kind of clutch should I get? Ceramic or something? I want something that doesn't slip alot (for help off-road), but something that won't be hell for daily driving.

I think the best manual trans for this application would be the Turbo R151F.  When I tackle a manual swap (not in my 4Runner, likely another donor), it will be with that trans.

Here's a good guide to the various manual Toyota transmissions...

OK - I'm rethinking this now.  It seems that the W series might be a better choice.  In my travels, I've read that the W uses a hydraulic release bearing instead of a mechanical shift fork, as well as being a push, not pull type (I might have that backwards, but it is the opposite of the R clutch arrangement) making it much easier to mate using a adapter ring at the trans end of the bellhousing (and using a 1UZ bell).  Not sure of the particulars on the flywheel and clutch/pp, but would like to work out a cheap solution to this instead of all the custom stuff from AUS/NZ.

I do agree with that, but I can't argue with a working, proven product, especially when I already have an R series transmission at my disposal.

Jump on the R series. The R150F is the Taco V6 transmission and it's a great way to go. It will easily handle your power. I have the 4cyl W59 and I'm going to run that sucker till it blows up behind my 1UZ. They say the W59 has weaker synchros, weak 5th and reverse but I'm going to put it to the test anyways. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when my W59 pops. This year I put another one in my truck that only had 30K on it so we'll see how long it holds up. I'm not going to beat up on it until I have money saved up for a new trans. Then I'm planning on going another route other than Toyota, haven't decided.

The R150F tranmissions are supposed to be good, but I've heard that the R151F transmissions are practically bulletproof. I think I'll use my R series that I've got now until it blows up (probably a long ways down the road) and then switch to a heavier duty trans.

Custom bell housing or adapter ring and custom (or "re purposed") flywheel are a minimum.  Some kits will allow use of existing clutch and PP.  Problem with your existing bell is that it has the starter bump in the wrong place.  The problem with your flywheel is that the starter teeth won't engage the 1UZ starter (flywheel diameter too small)

Why not get a bell housing from http://www.dellowauto.com.au/?

This may cost alittle more then the one SuperRunner on Pirate4x4 is making but there isn't a ETA on his bellhousing yet. I read up on Twisty's 1UZ swap and being that he is in Au. there was no reason for him to look any where else. I really wish I lived over there cause they get all the cool stuff.

I've got an freshly rebuilt R-151f just begging me to put this together.

For the record, I don't believe that the 151 is really any tougher than the rest of the R series, it just has the lower gears and came mated to the tougher 23 spline gear driven t-case.  The R's are supposed to be stronger than the W's.  I've heard people dispute that, but its generally based on "Well, my w56 hasn't blown yet, but my buddies r-150 did." as if that were some kind of scientific empirical evidence.  Marlin says the R's are tougher, and that guy has probably forgot more about Toyota trannies the all of us put together will ever know!

Speaking of Marlin, he makes a couple small upgrades for these transmissions.  I think his site is down right now, or I'd post links, but I can't find them to link them! ;D

Yeah, I figure I'll stick with my R150F for now. It isn't the best geared transmission (no legs at all; 1st gear blows),  but it will work until I decide to put some serious cash into my truck.

I have rebuilt my g52 series box, yes syncro weaker, depends if you like flat change shifting, yes reverse weaker, i dont drive everwhere in reverse, yes 5th gear is weaker, but thats only if you dont know when you should down change a loaded up top gear that is only meant for over drive (freeway / highway) driving.
But hey, i biult mine befor ei reseached the toyo boxs. stupid me. I i had learnt about the 151's i would of bought one of them before i got mine rebuilt. Oh well at least its all fresh now. And i wont be doing 4wD burnouts on the tar. 151 or W would be stronger than a G series. turbo supra use 151, all the rotor boys in aus use supra turbo boxs here beacuse they are the strongest 5 speed for the dollars. If only we could all afford TREMEC or borg Warner. And i thought all the best gear was in the US ? ???

But can you guys drive monsta trucks on the orad over there? like 44's and bigger? seen some mad HUGE f350 driving on the streets. Whats illeagal as far as mod cars go, generally. Because here in Aus we get the third degree when it comes to modified anything. But we still try to get away with it. Get it engineered and the cops cant touch us. Mod your truck or streeter and they will defect you for a sterio that is too loud! or adding something as simple as a pod filter on your AFM. crap Aussie laws. they have been crushing up all the old cars and want everyone driving run of the mill new cars. yeah so i look like my nieghbor, great.
