First off, sad to say that there's no new tech here.

This project has been permanently shelved.  I started back on this and the rust on the 4Runner was too severe (body AND frame) to warrant throwing any money at it.  Sitting in my yard for a couple of years pushed the 4Runner into the not worth saving category.  It spent 12 years on the road in the rust belt and a couple sitting out (was never garaged when it was operable either so that didn't help).  It's gone now - all the good stuff stripped off.

Like a lot of projects, started off with good intentions and a decent plan but life got in the way.  I've restored all the pics I could find (almost all of them), but there won't be any new tech added to this unless something crazy happens.

I have another (non-Toyota) project waiting in the wings, so an additional part of the demise of the UZ swap was having 2 inoperable vehicles on my property.  The Mrs wasn't standing for it...

In the end, I finally got a running Toyota V8 after all - in the form of a Sequoia family hauler.

Sweet - keep us posted.  Hoping your progress will motivate me to carve out time to finish mine.  :)

What are the specs on the radiator?  I skimmed the text and didn't see it.

Thanks for the diagrams - it looks as if the 5spd uses a 2 piece output shaft (looks as though the 35713 & 35770 mate together before getting to the output flange).  I wonder why it's built that way...

Does the VVTi 1UZ in your LS utilize a separate box to control the trans or is it part of the main ECU?

There is a good thread about the differences between A340F & early Lexus transmissions here:

If the output shaft is the same as the early transmissions it could likely be swapped.  As far as transmission control - not all the solenoids are needed for proper function (some are for softer shifts if memory serves).  Another option for trans control is the Suprastick box.  (

FINALLY...  Time for another chapter in this saga.  (Getting this into my garage was a monumental feat - not due to maneuvering but due to finding a home for all the junk in my garage.

Hi Tim -

Idler - this replaces the hydraulic fan.  Can get from a 2UZ.
Stabilizer - depends on the sump and how high/low you mount your motor in the engine bay.
Radiator - when I get there, I'll let you know...
Exhaust - I'm planning to build my own headers and connect to my Borla catback at first.

Yup, life and business keeps getting in the way.  I'm enjoying my kids and working on it when I can.

Right now, my 4Runner is covered in snow.  Finally got a heater in my garage, but it's taking a while to clear a space for it.

I love the 2 door 2nd Gen 4Runners.  Definitely will be a rare combination with a 1UZFE in it!
