Title: 2nd Gen pickup (HiLux) swap
Post by: TNRabbit on May 14, 2009, 07:08:34 AM
I'm studying up to make this swap into a non-lifted (like to keep it that way, if possible) 1994 DLX XtraCab 4x4 pickup (IFS).  This will be for towing capacity only, not for hot-rodding or serious off-road.  I'm concerned about cooling issues and mating the R150F tranny up with this engine, as well as all the other niggly issues (exhaust manifold & oil plan clearances, etc.).  I read somewhere that he GS-400 (VVT) engine has a different oil filter routing & exhaust manifolds that may make the swap easier.  Any comments?

..and why can't I post PMs to anyone?

I think PM ability is dictated by post count (to keep spammers at bay)

VVTi engines are more trouble to get working correctly - plus the newer engines have weaker internals.  Non VVTi would be a better choice.  Oil filter and exhaust manifolds aren't enough reason to justify the extra headaches.

I am in the same boat as you, I just bought this truck and I need it for towing. I originally planned on swapping in a Chevy LT1 but the 1uz is so much more appealing to me, I would like to keep her all Toyota. my truck is currently a 22re with a junk 4 speed automatic. is seems that the 2 popular choices are the r150 and r154. I have access to an r150 from a runner for cheap so I will prolly go with that. my goal is to have a vehicle that can tow 5000lbs aka a dual axle car trailer with brakes. would A 2 in body lift would help for fitment on this swap? Is it possible to position the motor in a way that keeps me from modifying the sump, exhaust and oil filter location? also are the custom bell housings worth the money? I see a couple aussie companies make them. I am looking for cad drawings of all parts that must be manufactured, ( adapter plate, x member motor mounts slave cylinder bracket ect) I have a pretty good in at a machine shop up the road from me, I should be able to get all of this stuff made up pretty cheap. does anyone have any advise or input. I have been reading up on your guys swaps here and on lextreme and i am impressed with your craftsmanship and ingenuity. this is my first Toyota and definitely the most ambitious project I have ever taken on but I am excited. do you guys have any advise for us?
